SIDELIGHTS:

Ron Padgett's poems "defy explanation and specification, appearing incoherent on the surface," Caroline G. Bokinsky noted in a Dictionary of Literary Biography essay, "but once the surface is penetrated, the private world of the poet emerges. Ron Padgett brilliantly transforms mundane experience into the subject of the poetry," Bokinsky continued, "through subtle humor, wordplay, and a childlike fascination with the world."

In Triangles in the Afternoon and Tulsa Kid, for example, Padgett's poems deal with commonplace things. "Padgett has an ability to play games with his free-flowing imagination," noted Bokinsky, "allowing him to grab an image and take off with it.… Padgett seeks in the mundane something that will excite the imagination: banal, trite, everyday words and phrases of language can be exciting," the critic added. Bokinsky summarized that the poet "never ceases from exploring the mystery of the commonplace while giving pleasure as he illuminates the trivial."

Praising Padgett's 1995 collection, New and Selected Poems, Voice Literary Supplement contributor Karen Volkman wrote: "This New and Selected is a fine sampling of a restless, hilarious, and haunting lyric intelligence, a 'phony' whose variable voices form a rare and raucous orchestration: the real thing."
