Montagu, Elizabeth 1917–2006

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born July 4, 1917; died January 10, 2006. Author. The daughter of the Ninth Earl of Sandwich, Montagu wrote novels and short stories, and was perhaps best known for her 1955 book, This Side of the Truth. Trained in nursing, she served in that capacity during World War II at St. Thomas's Hospital in London. Leaving hospital work in 1946, she taught nursing at the Royal College of Nursing until 1950. Afterwards, she focused her attention on writing, producing the novels Waiting for Camilla (1953), The Small Corner (1955), and This Side of the Truth. She later translated the Carl Zuckmayer play The Cold Light (1958) and published a short story collection, Change, and Other Stories (1966). Unfortunately, Montagu often suffered from writer's block, which she tried to alleviate by drinking alcohol. This resulted in an addiction that compromised her health and greatly limited her literary output. She completed no more books after her 1966 collection.
