SIDELIGHTS:

A.P. Martinich told CA: "Although I was interested in writing from grammar school, my primary goal in becoming a professor was to teach; but continued teaching required tenure and tenure required, not just writing, but publishing. Many of my books began as notes prepared for students or other teaching material provided to students. Fortunately, my research interests overlapped with my teaching. Once I became an established scholar, editors asked me to write books for specific series. Of the many joys of authorship, a special one is coauthoring works with my dissertation director, Avrum Stroll.

"Although I retain my commitment to helping students and consider teaching my first duty, I have been more successful as an author and enjoy the challenge of being able to solve a conceptual problem and to describe it clearly. In all of my writing, I think about what the audience wants to know, what the audience should want to know, and how I can satisfy these desires without compromising precision."
