A citizen of both the United States and Israel, Hoffman served in the latter's air force and later conducted research at the Olympic Training Center at the Wingate Institute in Israel. "Academically Hoffman has been quite active in ‘bridging the gap’ between the laboratory and the playing field," according to a faculty profile on the Web site of the College of New Jersey, where he teaches. The recipient of several awards in education, Hoffman serves as an advisor to several organizations, including as sports science advisor to the Major League Baseball Strength Coaches for whom he has been creating a program to educate baseball players about steroids.
