SIDELIGHTS: While playing wingback on his high-school football team, Gerald Dwight Hauser earned the nickname "Wings," which was destined to remain with him into adulthood. During the 1980s, he established a reputation for playing dangerous, psychotic characters in the films Vice Squad (1982), Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987), and L.A. Bounty (1989). During the 1990s, he appeared on the popular television series Roseanne as the next-door neighbor.

Hauser cowrote the script for No Safe Haven (1987), in which he plays the role of protagonist Clete Harris. The film is an action thriller built around the theme of revenge, much in the style of the Death Wish movies from the 1970s. Together with his son Cole, Hauser made the film Skins (1994), in which the two men respectively play the hero and the villain. Skins is the story of neo-Nazi thugs who hold a city in terror, and single out a gay man for particularly severe mistreatment.
