SIDELIGHTS:

Terri Dougherty has combined the two major interests in her life, family and writing, into a successful career as an author of children's books. Dougherty told CA, "I have wanted to be a writer ever since my first book, 'The Farm Mystery,' was published (stapled together) by my third-grade teacher. My desire to write was nurtured by my love of reading, from 'Nancy Drew' books to Harriet the Spy." After earning her degree in journalism and English from the University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh, she began work as a reporter, a background that "greatly helped my career as a freelance writer, teaching me how to write concisely and quickly as well as providing research and interview skills." Specializing in nonfiction accounts of interesting people, she has written biographical sketches about contemporary athletes and people in the news.

The "Jam Session" series offers slim volumes for individual athletes that give brief personal histories and highlight professional achievements. In her Horn Book Guide review of eight books in the "Jam Session" series, Carrie Harasimowicz described the books as "an enthusiastic introduction for new fans." Although reviewers noted that the volumes are short, School Library Journal critic Tom S. Hurlburt, reviewing Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, commented that "these highly visual titles are serviceable introductions for young and reluctant readers."

Dougherty does not confine her efforts to sports alone. Other books of interest cover businessmen, actors, actresses, and the U.S. Army and Airforce. Dougherty told CA, "My favorite part of my job is learning something new every day. I hope I am passing this love of learning on to my children and all those who read my books."
