OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born May 22, 1926, in Lawrence, MA; died of melanoma, October 31, 2003, in Pacific Palisades, CA. Educator and author. Dodge was an English professor emeritus at Santa Monica College and cofounder of UCLA's Writing Project. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, he graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1951. This was followed by military service in Korea from 1951 to 1953; Dodge then returned to school to receive his master's degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1955. He taught at UCLA for a year before joining the faculty at Santa Monica College in 1956, remaining there until his retirement in 1992. Dodge was passionate about writing and teaching, and helped found and codirected the Writing Project beginning in 1977. He was also the author of the popular How to Read and Write in College textbook (1962; revised edition, 1982) and, with Alan Casty, The Writing Project (1982). But Dodge did not just write about writing. Among other projects, including several ghost-written publications, he collaborated with John Wooden and Bill Sharman on a series of books about basketball, and cowrote I Am Not Spock (1975) with Star Trek actor Leonard Nemoy.
