SIDELIGHTS: Last Light Breaking is Patrick Corcoran's first novel. In it, Irishman Connolly is a former member of the British army. He joined in 1912 to make a better life for himself, but an uprising in 1916 resulted in Connolly becoming an outcast and exile from Great Britain. Now in failing health and mourning the recent death of his wife, he moves in with his son and daughter-in-law in Cardiff. He still feels like an outcast and is not used to the modern times, but he tries to make the best of the rest of his life. "This is a luminous, deeply affecting portrait of aging and loss by a talented new writer," concluded Joanne Wilkinson in a Booklist review.
