As an historian, Timothy J. Botti has written several books focusing on his primary areas of interest, which include the history of world empires, American military and strategic studies, ancient Roman history, and the U.S. economy and "Big Business." "When preparing to write, I conduct as thorough research as possible. I use inductive, rather than deductive, reasoning to avoid the mistake of making premature conclusions that exclude the discovery of vital information," the author was quoted as saying in a biography of him on the Political Family Tree Web site.

In his book Envy of the World: A History of the U.S. Economy & Big Business, Botti presents a history of the United States from 1670 with a focus on the economic and business events that would eventually lead the United States to become a dominant world power. For example, the author writes about the country's natural resources and the many immigrants who came here and made important contributions to the country's economic growth. Botti also includes an index of companies, products, and services that he believes have played major roles in the building of America. Peter R. Latusek, writing in the Library Journal, noted that the author writes with "broad strokes."
