BENNETT, Paul Lewis 1921-2002

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born January 21, 1921, in Gnadenhutten, OH; died of cancer May 28, 2002, in Granville, OH. Educator, poet, and author. Bennett joined the faculty at Denison University in 1947 and taught English there for approximately forty years; he was appointed to the Lorena Woodrow Burke Chair of English in 1978 and was designated poet-in-residence at Denison in 1986. In 1953 Bennett founded a writing program at the university; it was one of the first college writing programs in the United States that was open to undergraduate students. Bennett was himself a writer. His poetry collections include A Strange Affinity and The Eye of Reason. In the 1990s he wrote Appalachian Mettle and Max: The Tale of a Waggish Dog. Bennett also worked as a film writer and contributed to various literary journals and other magazines.
