Born August 15, 1955, in Rochester, MN; son of William H. (a surgeon) and Mary M. (a nurse and homemaker; maiden name, Green) Barnes; married Heather R. Simcoe (a painter and printer), July 5, 1995. Education: McMaster University, B.A. (with honors), 1986; University of Toronto, B.Ed., 1987.
