Weigl, Karl (b Vienna, 1881; d NY, 1949). Austrian-born composer, conductor, and teacher (Amer. cit. 1943). Singing coach at Vienna Opera under Mahler, 1904–7. Taught theory and comp. at New Vienna Cons. 1918–28. Prof. of music theory, Vienna Univ. 1931–8. Many of his works, written in a tonal and conservative idiom, were perf. in Vienna by Furtwängler, Szell, the Rosé Qt., and Elisabeth Schumann. Succeeded Gál at Vienna Univ. Inst. of Musicology. Went to USA 1938. Worked in NY public library, then taught at Hartt Sch. of Mus., Hartford, Conn., 1941–2, Brooklyn Coll. 1943–5, was head of mus. theory dept., New Eng. Cons., Boston, 1945–8, and taught at Philadelphia Acad. of Mus. 1948–9. Wrote memories of Mahler (1947, 1948). Works incl. opera The Pied Piper of Hamelin (Der Rattenfänger von Hameln) (c.1922); 6 syms. (1908–47); concs.: pf. (left hand) (1925), vn. (1928), pf. (1929–30), vc. (1934); 8 str. qts. (1905–49); 2 vn. sonatas (1922–3, 1937); choral and vocal comps.; many songs; pieces for kbd.
