Waldrop, Gideon W(illiam)

Waldrop, Gideon W(illiam) American music educator, conductor, and composer; b. Haskell County, Tex., Sept. 2, 1919; d. N.Y., May 19, 2000. He studied at Baylor Univ. (B.M., 1940) and took courses in composition with Rogers and Hanson at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. (M.M., 1941; Ph.D., 1952). He was conductor of the Waco-Baylor Sym. Orch. (1939-51); also was assoc. prof, at Baylor Univ. (1946-51). He served as ed. of the Musical Courier (1953-58) and as music consultant to the Ford Foundation (1958-61). He was assistant to the president (1961-63) and then dean (1963-85) of the Juilliard School in N.Y; then was president of the Manhattan School of Music (1986-88).
