Várady, Julia (b Oradea, 1941). Hungarian-born soprano. Cluj State Opera 1960–70; Frankfurt 1970–2; Munich from 1972. Débuts: Brit. (Edinburgh Fest.) 1974 (with Scottish Opera as Gluck's Alcestis); Salzburg Fest. 1976; NY Met 1978; CG 1992. Outstanding Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito and other dramatic roles. Created Cordelia in Reimann's Lear (Munich 1978). Sings sop. role in Britten's War Requiem.
