Van Lier, Jacques, Dutch cellist; b. The Hague, April 24, 1875; d. Worthing, England, Feb. 25, 1951. He studied cello with Hartog in The Hague and with Eberle in Rotterdam. He joined the Berlin Phil. in 1897; from 1899 to 1915 he was a cello instructor at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Cons, in Berlin. He was cellist in the Hollandisches Trio with J. van Veen (violin) and Coen-raad Bos (piano); the trio enjoyed a European reputation (1900-07); in 1915 he settled in The Hague; went to England in 1939. He publ. Violoncellbogentechnik and Moderne Violoncelltechnik der linken und der rechten Hand)also ed. about 400 classical pieces for cello.
