Valerius, Adrianus (Adriaan, Adriaen)

Valerius, Adrianus (Adriaan, Adriaen), Dutch lawyer, historian, poet, and musician; b. probably in Middelburg, c. 1575; d. Veere, Zeeland, Jan. 27, 1625. He settled in Veere as a notary in 1606, and later became sheriff and served as dean of the chamber of rhetoric. He wrote Neder-landtsche gedenck-clanck (Haarlem, 1626), a history of the Dutch and Spanish wars from 1555 to 1625; it includes 76 popular songs with accompaniments in French tablature for 1 or more 7-stringed lutes and 4-stringed citterns. P. J. Meertens, N. B. Tenhaeff, and A. Komter-Kuipers edited a complete ed. of the text with melodies but without the tablatures (Amsterdam, 1942). K. Bernet Kampers and C. Lelij ed. the song texts and tunes as De Heder en uit Valerius’ Nederlandtsche gedenck-clanck (Rotterdam, 1941).
