Tomášek, Jaroslav, Czech composer; b. Koryĉany, Moravia, April 10, 1896; d. Prague, Nov. 26, 1970. He studied music with Novák, and also attended a course in musicology at the Univ. of Prague. He composed mostly in small forms. Among his works were 2 song cycles, To Woman for High Voice (1919-20; with Orch., 1944-46) and Grief for Tenor, Soprano, Bass, and Orch. (1958-59), Rondo for Piano, left hand (1924), Piano Sonata for left hand (1925), 2 string quartets, Symphonic Rondo for Piano and Orch. (1962), and songs. His wife, Jaromíra TomáTomášek, Jaroslavková-Nováková (b. Jaroměř, May 23, 1892; d. Prague, April 25, 1957), was a soprano who taught singing at the Prague Cons. (from 1920).
