Tango, Egisto
Tango, Egisto, Italian conductor; b. Rome, Nov. 13, 1873; d. Copenhagen, Oct. 5, 1951. He studied engineering before pursuing musical training at the Naples Cons. He made his debut as an opera conductor in Venice (1893), then conducted at La Scala in Milan (1895) and at Berlin (1903-08). He conducted at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. (1909-10), in Italy (1911-12), and in Budapest (1913-19), where he gave the earliest performances of stage works by Bartók. From 1920 to 1926 he was active in Germany and Austria. In 1927 he settled in Copenhagen. He was distinguished for the technical precision and interpretative clarity of his performances.
