Stephan, (Gustav-Adolf Carl) Rudolf

Stephan, (Gustav-Adolf Carl) Rudolf, learned German musicologist; b. Bochum, April 3, 1925. He studied in Heidelberg, receiving instruction in violin at the Cons., in theory with Former at the Inst. of Protestant Church Music, and in musicology with Besseler and in philosophy with Jaspers and Hofmann at the Univ. He subsequently studied at the Univ. of Göttingen, where he took courses in philosophy with Hartmann and in musicology with Gerber (Ph.D., 1950, with the diss. Die Tenores der Motetten Ältesten Stils); completed his Habilitation there in 1963 with his Antiphonar-Studien, and then served on its faculty as a lecturer (1966–67). From 1967 to 1990 he was a prof. at the Free Univ. of Berlin, being made prof. emeritus in 1990. In 1981 he was a visiting prof. at the Univ. of Vienna. He served as editorial director of both the Schönberg-Gesamtausgabe and the Berg-Gesamtausgabe, and as president of the Institut für Neu Musik und Musikerziehung in Darmstadt (1970–76) and of the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung (1980–89). He has written valuable articles on topics ranging from medieval music to Hindemith for a variety of publications.
