Somis, Lorenzo Giovanni

Somis, Lorenzo Giovanni, Italian violinist, teacher, and composer, brother of Giovanni Battista Somis; b. Turin, Nov. 11, 1688; d. there, Nov. 29, 1775. He studied in Bologna, where he was made a member of the Accademia Filarmonica. After a sojourn in Paris, he returned to Turin as second violin in the ducal chapel (1724–70); his most distinguished student was Felice Giardini. He composed (12) Sonate for Violin and Cello or Harpsichord, op.l (Rome, 1722), (8) Sonate for Violin and Cello or Harpsichord, op.2 (Paris, c. 1740; ed. in Monumenti musicali italiani, III, Milan, 1976), and 6 sonate a 2 for Violin and Cello or Harpsichord, op.3 (Paris, c. 1740); also several violin concertos.
