Shure, Leonard , respected American pianist and teacher; b. Los Angeles, April 10, 1910; d. Nantucket, Mass., Feb. 28, 1995. He was a pupil of Artur Schnabel at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik (graduated, 1928). He made his recital debut in Berlin in 1927; after serving as Schnabel’s teaching assistant (1928–33), he made his U.S. debut in Boston in 1933; subsequently appeared as soloist with many U.S. orchs., as a recitalist, and as a chamber music artist. He served on the faculties of the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass., the New England Cons. of Music in Boston, the Mannes Coll. of Music in N.Y, the Cleveland Inst. of Music, the Univ. of Tex. in Austin, and Boston Univ., numbering among his pupils David del Tredici, Gilbert Kaiisch, Gary Karr, Ursula Oppens, and Pinchas Zukerman. He was particularly admired for his performances of Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms
