Seguin, (Arthur) Edward (Sheldon)
Seguin, (Arthur) Edward (Sheldon), English bass of Irish descent; b. London, April 7, 1809; d. N.Y., Dec. 6, 1852. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he first appeared in student operatic performances in 1828. After singing at Covent Garden (1833–34), the King’s Theatre, and Drury Lane (1835–38), he made his U.S. debut in N.Y. in Rooke’s Amelie on Oct. 15, 1838. He then toured North America with his own opera company. His wife, Ann Childe (b. London, c. 1812; d. N.Y., Aug. 1888), was a soprano. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, she sang with her husband in London and N.Y. Following his death, she taught voice. Their son, Edward Seguin (b. 1837; d. Oct. 9, 1879), was a bass who appeared with the Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa, Emma Abbott, and American opera companies.
