Rubinstein, Beryl , American pianist, teacher, and composer; b. Athens, Ga., Oct. 26, 1898; d. Cleveland, Dec. 29, 1952. He studied piano with his father and Alexander Lambert; toured the U.S. as a child (1905–11), then went to Berlin to study with Busoni and Vianna da Motta. He was appointed to the faculty of the Cleveland Inst. of Music in 1921, and became its director in 1932. He wrote an opera, The Sleeping Beauty, to a libretto by John Erskine (Juilliard School of Music, N.Y., Jan. 19, 1938); 32 piano studies; 3 dances for Piano; transcriptions from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. He conducted his orch. Scherzo with the Cleveland Orch. on March 17, 1927; performed his Piano Concerto with the same orch. on Nov. 12, 1936.
