Quilter, Roger

Quilter, Roger , English composer; b. Brighton, Nov. 1, 1877; d. London, Sept. 21, 1953. He received his primary education at Eton Coll., then studied with Iwan Knorr at the Hoch Cons. in Frankfurt am Main. He was particularly noted for his fine settings of Shakespeare’s poems.

Works

Incidental music for Shakespeare’s play As You Like It (1922); The Sailor and His Lass for Soprano, Baritone, Chorus, and Orch. (1948); numerous song cycles, among them 7 Elizabethan Lyrics, 3 Songs of the Sea, 4 Shakespeare Songs, etc.; also a light opera, Julia (London, Dec. 3, 1936).
