Pires, (Luis) Filipe
Pires, (Luis) Filipe, Portuguese composer; b. Lisbon, June 26, 1934. He studied piano with Mendes and composition with Croner de Vasconcelos at the Lisbon Cons. (1946–54), and then took courses at the Hannover Hochschule für Musik (1957–60). He taught composition at the Oporto Cons. (1960–70) and at the Lisbon Cons. (1972–75), and subsequently worked in an electronic studio in Paris with Pierre Schaeffer. His music hewed resolutely to the tenets of the cosmopolitan avant-garde.
