Palomino, José
Palomino, José, Spanish composer; b. Madrid, 1755; d. Las Palmas, April 9,1810. He became a violinist in the Spanish royal chapel at an early age, and received training from Rodriguez de Hita. He first gained notice as a composer of tonadillas, his El canapé (Madrid, 1769) being particularly well received. In 1774 he went to Lisbon and entered the S. Cecilia brotherhood. By 1785 he was a violinist in the Portuguese royal chapel. His opera // ritorno di Astrea in terra (June 15, 1785), presented in honor of the double marriages of the Portuguese and Spanish infantes, was a notable success. After the royal family fled in the face of Napoleon’s invasion, Palomino settled in Las Palmas as maestro de capilla in 1808.
