Niemtschek (Niemetschek, Němeček), Franz Xaver
Niemtschek (Niemetschek, Němeček), Franz Xaver, Czech writer on music; b. Sadská, near Poděbrady, July 24, 1766; d. Vienna, March 19, 1849. He studied at the Prague Gymnasium (1776–82), then studied philosophy at the Univ. of Prague (Ph.D., 1800), where he was a prof. of philosophy (1802–20). He is known in musical annals for his biography of Mozart, whom he greatly admired and evidently knew personally: Leben des k. k. Kapellmeisters Wolfgang Gottlieb Mozart (Prague, 1798; 2nd ed., 1808; Eng. tr., 1956).
