Müller-Blattau, Joseph (Maria)

Müller-Blattau, Joseph (Maria), noted German musicologist; b. Colmar, Alsace, May 21, 1895; d. Saarbrücken, Oct. 21, 1976. He studied musicology with Friedrich Ludwig at the Univ. of Strasbourg, and composition and conducting with Pfitzner and organ with Ernst Munch at the Strasbourg Cons. He served in the German army during World War I; after the Armistice of 1918, he resumed his studies in musicology with Wilibald Gurlitt at the Univ. of Freiburg im Breisgau (Ph.D., 1920, with the diss. Grundzüge einer Geschichte der Fuge; publ. in Königsberg, 1923; 3^rd ed., rev., 1963). He then completed his Habilitation at the Univ. of Königsberg in 1922 with his Die Kompositionslehre Heinrich Schützens in der Fassung seines Schulers Christoph Bernhard (publ. in Leipzig, 1926; 2^nd ed., 1963). He taught at the Univ. of Königsberg; was promoted to reader there in 1928; then taught at the univs. of Frankfurt am Main (1935–37) and Freiburg im Breisgau (1937–39); subsequently served in military administration (1939–42); then lectured at the Univ. of Strasbourg during the last years of World War II. From 1952 to 1958 he was director of the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken; he also taught at the Univ. of Strasbourg from 1952 to 1964. He was the editor of the abortive 12^th ed. of Riemann’s Musiklexikon (1937–39), of which only a few issues appeared before the outbreak of World War II made further publication impossible.
