Melles, Carl

Melles, Carl, Hungarian conductor; b. Budapest, July 15, 1926. He received his musical training in Budapest. In 1951 he was appointed conductor of the Hungarian State Orch. and the Sym. Orch. of Hungarian Radio and Television. He was also a prof, at the Budapest Academy of Music (1954–56). After the abortive rebellion in 1956, he led the Radio Orch. of Luxembourg (1958–60); also conducted at Bayreuth and Salzburg. He eventually made his home in Vienna and became a regular conductor of the Vienna Sym. Orch. and on the Austrian Radio.
