Marshall-Hall, George W(illiam) L(ouis), English-born Australian conductor, music educator, and composer; b. London, March 26, 1862; d. Melbourne, July 18, 1915. He studied in Berlin (1880) and with Grove and Parry at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1883). After settling in Australia, he became the first Ormond Prof. at the Univ. of Melbourne in 1890 and founder of its Conservatorium in 1895. In 1900 he founded his own cons. and served as its director until his death. Between 1892 and 1913 he also conducted his own concert series. Among his works were 5 operas, 2 syms., chamber music, and songs.
