Machado, Augusto (de Oliveira)
Machado, Augusto (de Oliveira), Portuguese composer; b. Lisbon, Dec. 27, 1845; d. there, March 26, 1924. He was a pupil of Junior, Lami, and D’Almeide in Lisbon, and of Lavignac and Danhauser in Paris. From 1892 to 1908 he was director of the San Carlos Theater in Lisbon. He also taught singing at the Cons, (from 1893), serving as its director (1901–10). Besides numerous operettas, he wrote the operas A Cruz de oiro (Lisbon, 1873), A Maria da Ponte (Lisbon, 1879), Lauriane (Marseilles, Jan. 9,1883; his most successful work), Os Dorias (Lisbon, 1887), Mario Wetter (Lisbon, 1898), Venere (Lisbon, 1905), and La Borghesina (Lisbon, 1909). For the 3rdcentenary of the death of Camoens he wrote the symphonic ode Camões es os Luziadas (1880). He also wrote organ and piano pieces.
