Lumsden, Sir David (James)
Lumsden, Sir David (James), noted English organist, harpsichordist, choirmaster, and music editor; b. Newcastle upon Tyne, March 19, 1928. He studied with Ord and Dart at the Univ. of Cambridge (Mus.B., 1951; Ph.D., 1955) and at the Univ. of Oxford (Ph.D., 1959). He was organist of the Univ. of Nottingham (1954–56); also founder-conductor of the Nottingham Bach Soc. He served as rector chori at Southwell Minster and director of music at the Univ. Coll. of North Staffordshire, Keele (1956–59). He then was organist at New Coll., Oxford (1959–78); also taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1960–62). He was principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow (1978–82) and of the Royal Academy of Music in London (1982–92). He was knighted in 1985.
