Lillo, Giuseppe

Lillo, Giuseppe, Italian composer and teacher; b. Galatina, Lecce, Feb. 26,1814; d. Naples, Feb. 4,1863. He began his training with his father. After taking counterpoint lessons with Carnovale in Lecce, he settled in Naples and studied with Francesco Lanaza (piano), Furno (harmony and counterpoint), and Zingarelli (composition) at the Reale Collegio di Musica (later the Cons, di S. Pietro a Majella). In 1846 he joined its faculty as prof. of harmony, and then was prof. of counterpoint and composition from 1859 until mental illness compelled him to resign in 1861. His compositions include the operas La moglie per 24 ore ossia L’ammalato di buona salute (Naples, 1834) and L’osteria i Andujar (Naples, Sept. 1840), syms., chamber music, piano pieces, and sacred choral works.
