Lates, James
Lates, James, English violinist and composer; b. c. 1740; d. Oxford, Nov. 21, 1777. After studies in Italy, he was an orch. player in Oxford. He was also associated with the Duke of Marlborough’s musical ventures in Blenheim. Lates was an accomplished composer of chamber music. Among his works, all publ. in London, were 6 Duets for 2 Violins (1761) and for 2 Flutes (1761), 6 Solos for Violin and Basso Continuo (e. 1765), and 6 Sonatas for 2 Violins and Basso Continuo (e. 1768), and for Violin, Cello, and Basso Continuo (c. 1775).
