lang, k. d. (originally, Lang, Kathryn Dawn), Canadian country-pop singer; b. Consort, Alberta, Canada, Nov. 2, 1961. Before venturing into pop turf, k. d. lang was a true revolutionary in country music: claiming to be the reincarnation of Patsy Cline, she dug straight to the roots of country on a series of gutsy records. Nashville barely gave her the time of day—she got a similar cold-shoulder treatment from country radio—and in 1992 lang abandoned her country career and applied her gorgeous vocals to smooth torch songs and other more urbane pop styles. The wildly popular and Grammy Award-winning Ingenue (1992) kicked off this phase of her career, which coincided with lang’s coming out and becoming a spokesperson for gay and animal rights.
