Kullak, Adolf
Kullak, Adolf, German music theorist, critic, and composer, brother of Theodor Kullak; b. Meseritz, Feb. 23, 1823; d. Berlin, Dec. 25, 1862. He studied at the Univ. of Berlin, then music with A.B. Marx in Berlin. He subsequently taught at his brother’s academy there and wrote music criticism for various periodicals. He publ. Das Musikalisch- Schöne (Leipzig, 1858) and Die Ästhetik des Klavierspiels (Berlin, 1861; 4th ed., 1906, by W. Ni-emann; 5th ed., 1916; Eng. ed., N.Y, 1892), and also composed piano pieces and songs. His son, Ernst Kullak (b. Berlin, Jan. 22, 1855; d. there, 1914), was a pianist and composer.
