Kroó, György
Kroó, György, Hungarian musicologist; b. Budapest, Aug. 26, 1926. He studied violin at the National Cons, and at the Academy of Music in Budapest, and also attended classes in musicology there with Szabolcsi and Bartha. In 1957 he was named head of music education of the Hungarian Radio. In 1960 he became a guest lecturer at the Academy of Music, joining its permanent faculty in 1967, serving as chairman of its musicology dept. from 1973, and serving as a prof, of musicology (from 1975). His writings include Robert Schumann (Budapest, 1958), Hector Berlioz (Budapest, 1960), Bartók Béla szinpadi müvei (Bela Bartók’s Stage Works; Budapest, 1962), Wenn Schumann ein Tagebuch geführt hätte (Budapest, 1962), A “szabadito” opera (The “Rescue” Opera; Budapest, 1966), Richard Wagner (Budapest, 1968), Bartók Mauz (A Guide to Bartók; Budapest, 1971; Eng. ed., 1974), A magyar zeneszerzés harminc ève (30 Years of Hungarian Composition; Budapest, 1975), Rácz Aladár (Budapest, 1979), Heilawâc. Négy tanulmâny Wagner a Nibelung gyürüjeröl (4 Studies on Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen; Budapest, 1983), and Az albumtól a szvitig (From the Album to the Suite; Budapest, 1986).
