Kovačević, Krešimir
Kovačević, Krešimir, significant Croatian musicologist; b. Zagreb, Sept. 16, 1913. He studied at the Univ. of Leipzig (Ph.D., 1943, with a diss. on folk music from the Meotimurje region of Croatia). He taught music in Osijek and Dubrovnik (1940–50) and then at the Zagreb Academy of Music (prof., 1950; vice-dean, 1961-71; dean, from 1971). He was also a repetiteur in Zagreb and Belgrade (1936–39), conductor of the Dubrovnik Orch. (1946–50), and a music critic for several publications. He wrote primarily on Croatian contemporary music; publ. the valuable Hrvatski kompozitori i njihova djela (Croatian Composers and Their Works; Zagreb, 1960) and The History of Croatian Music of the Twentieth Century (in Eng.; Zagreb, 1967). He also edited the 2nd ed. of the Muzička enciklopedija (3 vols., 1971-77) and contributed the Croatian entries to the Slovene reference work Jugoslovanska glasbena dela (1980).
