Jones, Richard
Jones, Richard, English opera and theater producer; b. London, June 7, 1953. He was educated at the Univ. of Hull and the Univ. of London. In 1982 he commenced his career as an opera producer with Ar-gento’s A Water Bird Talk at the Scottish Opera in Glasgow, where he returned to stage Das Rheingold in 1989 and Die Walküre in 1991. In 1984-85 he produced operas by Mozart, Salieri, and Paisiello at the Battig-nano Festival. Afterstaging Don Pasquale at Opera Northern Ireland in Belfast (1985) and Mignon atthe Wexford Festival (1986), he produced Manon and Carmen at Opera North in Leeds (1987). His staging of Weir’s A Night at the Chinese Operawas seen at the Kent Opera in 1988. In 1989 he produced the premiere of Blake’s The Plumber’s Gift at the English National Opera in London. After staging Mazeppa at the Bregenz Festival (1991), he oversaw the production of Der fliegende Holländer at the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam (1993). In 1994 he staged Giulio Cesare at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Jones was responsible for the staging of the Ring cycle at London’s Covent Garden in 1994-95. In 1998 he returned to Munich to produce The Midsummer Marriage.
