Jones, Philip (Mark)

Jones, Philip (Mark), outstanding English trumpeter; b. Bath, March 12, 1928; d. Jan. 17, 2000. He studied at the Royal Coll. of Music in London with Ernest Hall. He served as principal trumpet player in the Royal Phil. (1956–60), Philharmonia Orch. (1960–64), London Phil. (1964–65), New Philharmonia Orch. (1965–67), and BBC Sym. Orch. (1968–71). In 1951 he founded the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, commissioning many composers to write works for his ensemble, remaining its director until 1986. He was head of the wind and percussion dept. at the Royal Northern Coll. of Music in Manchester (1975–77) and then at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1983–88). From 1989 to 1994 he was principal of Trinity Coll. of Music in London. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1977 and in 1986 a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
