Järvi, Paavo, Estonian-born American conductor, son of Neeme Järvi; b. Tallinn, Dec. 30, 1962. He received training in percussion and conducting at the Tallinn School of Music. After his family emigrated to the U.S. in 1980, he studied conducting with Max Rudolf at the Curtis Inst. of Music in Philadelphia and with Leonard Bernstein at the Los Angeles Phil. Inst. He appeared as a guest conductor with major orchs. in Europe, North America, and the Far East. In 1994 he became chief conductor of the Malmö Sym. Orch. and in 1995 principal guest conductor of the Stockholm Phil., a position he also held with the City of Birmingham Sym. Orch. He became music director of the Cincinnati Sym. Orch. in 2001.
