Inzenga (y Castellanos), José, Spanish composer and teacher; b. Madrid, June 3, 1828; d. there, June 28, 1891. After studying solfège with his father, he received training in piano from Pedro Albéniz at the Madrid Cons. He later was a student in composition of Carafa at the Paris Cons. (1842-48). His first zarzuela, El campamento (Madrid, May 8, 1851), proved to be his greatest success in that genre. He also collaborated on the successful zarzuela Para seguir a una mujer (Madrid, Dec. 24, 1851). From 1860 until his death he taught voice at the Madrid Cons. In 1857 the Spanish government commissioned him to collect regional songs and dances, which he publ. as Cantos y bailes populares de España (3 vols., 1874-88). He also publ. a treatise on accompaniment (Madrid, 1876) and La música en el tempio católico (Madrid, 1878).
