Howard, Kathleen, Canadian-American contralto; b. Niagara Falls, Ontario, July 17, 1884; d. Los Angeles, Aug. 15, 1956. She studied in N.Y. with Bouhy and in Paris with Jean de Reszke. She appeared at the Metz Opera (1907–09), at Darmstadt (1909–12), at Covent Garden in London (1913), and with the Century Opera in N.Y. (1914–15). After appearing as the nurse in Boris Godunov with the Metropolitan Opera in Brooklyn on Nov. 14, 1916, she made her formal debut with the company in N.Y. as the 3rd Lady in Die Zauberflöte on Nov. 20, 1916, remaining on its roster until 1928. After her retirement from the stage, she was engaged in magazine work and was fashion ed. of Harper’s Bazaar (1928–33). She publ, an autobiography, Confessions of an Opera Singer (N.Y., 1918).
