Hotteterre

Hotteterre, family of French musicians: (1) Nicolas Hotteterre (b. 1637; d. Paris, May 10, 1694), a hurdygurdy player; his brother (2) Martin Hotteterre (d.1712), also a hurdy- gurdy player and a performer at the court ballets; (3) Louis Hotteterre (d. 1719), son of Nicolas, who played flute at the French court (1664–1714); his brother (4) Nicolas Hotteterre (II) (d. Paris, Dec. 4, 1727), who played flute and oboe in Lully’s orch. at the court of Louis XIV; their cousin (5) Jacques Hotteterre (b. Sept. 29, 1674; d. Paris, July 16, 1762), surnamed “le Romain,” evidently owing to his long sojourns in Rome, popularized the transverse (German) flute at the French court and publ. several manuals on that instrument and others: Principes de la flûte traversière ou flûte d’Allemagne, de la flûte à bec ou flûte douce et du hautbois (Paris, 1707; sometimes attributed to Louis; the 1728 ed. was reprinted in facsimile, Kassel, 1941; Eng. tr. by P. Douglas, N.Y., 1968; 2^nd ed., 1983); L’Art de préluder sur la flûte traversière, sur la flûte à bec, etc. (Paris, 1712; 2^nd ed. under the title Méthode pour apprendre…, c. 1765); Méthode pour la musette (1738). He also wrote sonatas, duos, trios, suites, rondes (chansons à danser), and minuets for flute.
