Gungl, Joseph (Jozsef)

Gungl, Joseph (Jozsef), famous Hungarian bandmaster and composer; b. Zsambek, Dec. 1, 1810; d. Weimar, Jan. 31, 1889. He studied in Buda. He played the oboe in the band of an artillery regiment in the Austrian army, and later became its conductor. He wrote a number of marches and dances, which became extremely popular, and also traveled with his band all over Germany. In 1843 he established his own orch. in Berlin. He made an American tour in 1849, and then returned to Europe and lived mostly in Munich and Frankfurt am Main.
