BBC Northern Orch., Manchester, 1944–51, Bournemouth SO 1951–61, WNO 1961–3, Royal Liverpool PO 1963–77, ENO 1978–9. During his time in Liverpool, cond. cycle of Mahler syms. and many works by Eng. composers from Elgar to Maxwell Davies. OBE 1958, CBE 1968. Knighted 1973.
