Gesius, Bartholomäus
Gesius, Bartholomäus, German composer; b. Miincheberg, c. 1559; d. Frankfurt an der Oder, 1613. He was educated at the Univ. of Frankfurt an der Oder (1575-80). In 1582 he was in Miincheberg as Kantor. After living in Muskau and Wittenberg, he became Kantor at the Marienkirche in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1593. His St. John Passion (1588) is a significant work in the development of the Protestant Passion. Among his other works were another Passion, Latin pre-Reformation songs, Protestant hymns, occasional works, and music for school use.
