Gerber, Rudolf
Gerber, Rudolf, learned German musicologist; b. Flehingen, Baden, April 15, 1899; d. Göttingen, May 6, 1957. He studied at the Univ. of Halle, and then at the Univ. of Leipzig (Ph.D., 1922, with the diss. Die Arie in den Opern Johann Adolf Hasses; publ. as Der Operntypus Johann Adolf Hasses und seine textlichen Grundlagen, Leipzig, 1925). In 1923 he became Abert’s assistant at the Univ. of Berlin. He completed his Habilitation in 1928 at the Univ. of Giessen with his Das Passionsrezitativ bei Heinrich Schiitz und seine stilgeschichtlichen Grundlagen (publ. in Giitersloh, 1929). In 1928 he joined its faculty, where he later was a prof, and head of its Music-Historical Inst. (1937–43). In 1943 he became a prof, at the Univ. of Göttingen. Among his other writings were Johannes Brahms (Potsdam, 1938), Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck (Potsdam, 1941; 2nd. ed., rev, 1950); and Backs Brandenburgische Konzerte (Kassel, 1951). He also ed. works by Schiitz, J.S. Bach, and Gluck.
