Gedda [Ustinov], Nicolai (b Stockholm, 1925). Swed. tenor of Russ. descent. Début Stockholm 1951 in Sutermeister's Der rote Stiefel, leading to appearances at La Scala 1953; Paris 1954; London (CG) 1954; Vienna 1957. Amer. début (Pittsburgh) 1957; Salzburg Fest. 1957; NY Met 1957–79 (created Anatol in Barber's Vanessa, 1958). Also specialized in operetta by Lehár, etc. Frequent singer of Lieder and oratorio (has recorded Elgar's Dream of Gerontius).
