Gates Bernard

Gates, Bernard, English bass; b. Westminster, c. 1685; d. North Aston, Oxfordshire, Nov. 15, 1773. He was one of the Children of the Chapel Royal. In 1708 he was appointed a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. About 1727 he became Master of the Children, in 1731 lay vicar at Westminster Abbey, and in 1741 Master of the Choristers, positions he retained until 1757. Gates particularly distinguished himself in the music of Handel.
